Painter, installation, video, and sound artist Scott Stulen returned to the Department of Art as this semester’s Visiting Artist. Scott gave two fantastic lectures–> a lecture on Wednesday evening about his work (memory, popular culture, failure/loss, and the Midwest) and another lecture about contemporary sound and video art for students enrolled in Prof. Krista Hoefle’s course “Beyond Object.” In addition to pop culture ephemera and icons that serve as underpinnings for his work (Little House on the Prairie, Star Wars, Disney-fied nature, etc.), Scott shared his influences in contemporary sculpture and painting, which include Gerhard Richter, Charles Ray, and Peter Doig. For students in “Beyond Object,” Scott shared a large selection of video work by artists such as Jesper Just, Roman Signer, Christian Marclay, and Janet Cardiff. Scott had a ton of information and insights to share with students and faculty…it rocked! Thank you Scott!
